Quilt Appraisal
About appraisals:
A written appraisal takes about 30 minutes to complete. The appraiser will need to see the quilt in person in order to do an accurate and complete appraisal. You can contact me to set up an appointment for an appraisal.
Why should you have your Quilt appraised?
· To establish a replacement value for insurance purposes · To purchase a “Fine Arts Floater” · To determine a value for donation, gift, or estate purposes for the IRS · To provide a value to a venue that requires insurance and/or appraisals · To provide adequate coverage during shipping or while in transit · To aid in determining Fair Market Value · A meaningful addition to a quilt given as a gift
Three Types of Quilt Appraisals
As a service to quiltmakers, quilt collectors, quilt owners and dealers, the American Quilter’s Society has developed a program to certify appraisers who are qualified to evaluate and document values for quilts and quilted textiles. Appraisers certified by AQS have been tested on their knowledge of fabrics, regional influences, construction techniques and styles.
They have also agreed to the Appraiser Certification Program Code of Ethical Practices.
The AQS Certified Appraiser Code of Ethics
Appraiser's Certified by the American Quilter's Society are qualified to evaluate quilts and quilted textiles. In order to begin certification testing, the candidate must sign and subscribe to the following code of ethics.
* The purpose of the appraisal and ownership of the property should be established before beginning an appraisal. Professional tact and finesse in reacting to the client and/or the property to be appraised is paramount.
* Appraisers should inform clients when a property does not warrant appraisal.
* It is unethical to write an appraisal on an existing property without performing a physical examination of it.
* It is unethical to knowingly put a false insurance value on a property.
* Appraisers should avoid the appearance of conflict of interest.
* It is unethical to take advantage of an appraisal situation to solicit.
* It is unethical to make use of information gained from any quilt appraisal without permission of the owner.
* It is incumbent upon each certified appraiser to maintain professional courtesy with regard to all other appraisers.
* It is unethical to appraise beyond one's knowledge, abilities, and experience.
